With the recent release of The Castellow’s cover of “Hurricane”, we thought it’d be fun to listen and compare the various other covers of the track including the original version recorded in 1980. But first, a brief history.
“Hurricane” was co-written by Thom Schuyler, Keith Stegall, and Stewart Harris and originally recorded by Levon Helm for inclusion on his third solo album, American Son. Levon was one of three lead singers and the drummer for the Canadian-American rock band The Band. The song was recorded a year later by country music singer Leon Everette as the lead single to his 1981 album of the same name and peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. Many years later, Texas rock group The Band of Heathens recorded their version of “Hurricane” in 2018, which takes us to today where we have the latest cover from Georgia rising stars, The Castellows. Listen to the four versions of “Hurricane” below and let us know who did it better.
